Services & Rates

My rates are less expensive than industry standard, but that doesn’t mean you are getting compromised service. I have the highest respect for my fellow editors, and I don’t want to undervalue the important work editors do, but I want authors to be able to get the help they need without spending a fortune. With me, you get professional-level editing at a fraction of the price.

Developmental/Substantive Editing

Do you have a story idea, but you need help developing it? Do you have a vision that you need help bringing to fruition? This type of edit helps with plot holes, rearranging chapters, making sure your content is coherent on a basic level, etc. I can help you find the bigger, more glaring issues. I will look at tone, style, and format for your intended audience. I’ll let you know if things make sense and are clear and compelling. Not focused on grammar at this phase, although if I notice you have a tendency to make certain mistakes, I will let you know.

Fiction: .015-.02/word — $15-$20/1,000 words
Non-Fiction: .02-.025/word — $20-$25/1,000 words

Line Editing

You have a solid story, and you just need help improving it. This includes stylistic editing, revising sentences or paragraphs to avoid ambiguity, and improving flow and pacing. This helps with awkward or clunky phrasing while preserving your voice. I help with show rather than tell and point out where storytelling needs some tweaking. I look at things like plot, character development, theme, point of view, readability, tension, and description.

Copy Editing

Copy editing is when I take a closer look at the finer points of your manuscript. I check for consistency, proper style (nitpicky rules for capitalization, punctuation, etc.), accuracy, unconventional spellings, word usage, grammar, stray formatting issues, etc. This is a refining stage to look for things that can be improved to avoid confusion or little uh-ohs that distract readers. (Not the final phase.)

Non-Fiction: .02-.025/word — $20-$25/1,000 words

Proofreading

This is the last stage of editing. You should have had several sets of eyes on your manuscript by this point. You think it is DONE and just about ready for print. You just need a once-over to make sure nothing fell through the cracks. Fine tune for consistency, typographical errors, (these often pop up in previous stages of editing when you accidentally make an error while fixing something else). In this stage I look at grammar, spelling/punctuation, discrepancies, overall appearance, etc.

Non-Fiction: .012-.017/word — $12-$17/1,000 words
